The Competition
Who is the competition sponsor?
Originally founded in 1975 as the National Yellow Pages Service Association (NYPSA), the Yellow Pages AssociationŽ (YPAŽ) is the largest trade organization of a print and digital media industry valued at more than $31 billion worldwide. Association members include Yellow Pages publishers, who produce products that account for almost 90 percent of the Yellow Pages revenue generated in the U.S. and Canada. Members also include the industry's international, national and local sales forces, certified marketing representatives (CMRs) and associate members, a group of industry stakeholders that include Yellow Pages advertisers, vendors and suppliers. The Association has members in 29 countries.
The mission of YPA is to LEAD, SERVE, GROW and ADVOCATE for the Yellow Pages Industry.
Neg Norton is president of the Association. David Swanson, chairman and CEO of R.H. Donnelley Corporation, is the chairman of the board of directors. YPA board member companies include Ambassador Publications, the Association of Directory Marketing, AT&T Advertising & Publishing, DataNational/Volt Directory Systems, Idearc Inc., Marquette Group, RR Donnelley, Wahlstrom Group and Yellow Pages Group.

Is there a fee to enter or participate?
There are no fees associated with participation in the competition.
Who is eligible to participate?
Any student enrolled full- or part-time at two and four year US and Canadian colleges/universities. Students must also have a faculty sponsor.
Is the competition restricted to advertising majors?
No. Students of any major are encouraged to participate.
Is there a specific time frame in which the entry must be worked on?
No. The entry may be completed at any time. The only time-based requirement is that the entry arrive no later than April 23, 2010. The address for submission is noted in the rules and regulations.
Where can I see all of the rules and regulations?

The client is fictitious, so no contact is possible.

Does a logo for Haven Bay Veterinary Hospital exist?
No. You are welcome to design a logo and to include this logo in your ads.
Resources
What resources do you provide to help us understand the client and the assignment?
Can we do research on our own?
Independent research is encouraged. We would expect the results of your research to be reflected in the approach you take in developing the print and online advertising.
Can we enlist the aid of industry professionals or others?
You can talk to industry professionals and others about yellow pages advertising or any subject area that you feel will help improve the quality of your entry. The more informed you are the better your work will be.
Can our faculty sponsor critique our work?
Your faculty sponsor can critique your work in order to identify strengths and weaknesses, but he/she MAY NOT provide solutions to identified problems or weaknesses.
Where can I find a Visa and Master Card logo?
You can find variations/sizes of these logos by doing an image search on Yahoo! or Google.
Where can we find additional pictures?
Again, an image search on Yahoo! or Google will provide multiple examples. Be certain, however, not to include any images that are copyright protected. A search for "stock photography" can also be useful.
The Student Team and Student Eligibility
Can a student submit more than one entry or be a member of more than one team?
Does a student have to be a member of a team?
No. A student can work alone and submit his/her own entry.
Can we have more than three people on our team?
What if we want to add a member to our team? What if a member drops off our team?
Team composition can change from the time you register to the time you submit your entry. If team composition changes you will need to reregister the new team by using the registration form found here. Make certain to check the "REVISION" box on the form when you submit your revised team composition.
I plan to graduate in January, before the submission deadline. Can I still enter the competition?
Yes, as long as you were a full or part-time student during the Fall semester.
Faculty Advisor
Do we have to have a faculty advisor or sponsor?
Does the faculty advisor have to be a full-time, or tenured (tenure-track) individual?
No. Part-time instructors and lecturers can also serve as a faculty sponsor.
What if our faculty advisor changes?
This is permissible if you email us the name and email address of your former and new faculty advisor. You can send the email to Dr. Joel Davis.
Can a faculty advisor sponsor more than one team?
Will incomplete entries be judged?
Does the work have to done outside of class?
No, your entry can be an assigned class project.
Does an entry have to be in finished form, that is, completed as it would appear in the print or online yellow pages?
Yes, the judges need to see your entries in finished form.
If I don't have room in the ad, can I leave out some of the required elements.
Ads that do not contain all of the required elements will be penalized.
Can I submit my entry before April?
Yes, entries can be submitted at any time prior to the deadline.
What if my entry arrives after the deadline?
Only entries that arrive before the deadline will be judged, with this exception: If a submission is sent to arrive at a carrier-confirmed time prior to the deadline, but is delayed by the carrier, then the entry will be judged. This might occur, for example, if you use a courier service such as FedEx that promises delivery by the deadline, but for unforeseen reasons delivers the entry late.

Can I make changes after I submit my entry?
Judging
Who are the judges?
Judges will be yellow pages industry professionals who have an in-depth understanding of, and experience with, proven effective and award-winning yellow pages creative.
What are the criteria on which entries will be judged?
- Strength of executional concept
- Quality of executions with regard to copy, illustrations, overall design and layout
- Originality
- Consistency in tone, manner and approach across executions
- Ability to break through the clutter, communicate and motivate contact
- Incorporation of all required elements
Are all entrants notified or just the winners?
All participants are notified of the date on which winners will be posted on the web site.
When will winners be announced?
No later than May 15, 2010.
Prizes and Awards
If students made differential contributions to a winning entry, can the prize money be distributed to reflect these differences?
No. Monetary awards will be distributed evenly across team members.
Can I receive my prize in cash?
